Elon Musk is correct – bear with me – when he blames bureaucracy and the rise of “Administrators” for many of the faults not just in governments but also in US businesses.
This modern disease is most visible in US healthcare because of the myriad number of players involved, each requiring that its own interests be paramount. Interests which seldom merge, but do create impossible levels of workplace complexity.
The current response of medical providers facing such complexity is to grow administrative staff. And bureaucrats beget bureaucrats - something that the AI condom cannot prevent. The response of an increasing numbers of staff and physicians is to leave.
This combination of bureaucratic tendencies and huge number of US medical players has created an intolerable hellhole for clinicians.
As Musk found out, simply eliminating layers of bureaucrats does not create a lean organization. It’s a structural problem not a numbers problem.
Step 1 is to reduce the number of players in US healthcare. Bernie Sanders has a few suggestions.
